The Implemention/Deployment of iOS Devices in Educational Settings
The implementation/deployment of iOS devices in schools normally occurs in one of three ways:
1. School Owned vs Student Owned
Schools must decide whether they are going to keep ownership of the devices or seek for parents to pay for the devices (as an additional payment on top of school fees). Each has its own advantages and disadvantages:
1.1. Student Owned
If students own their own iOS device, they are responsible for:
Choosing this option has its pros and cons:
Pros
Cons
1.2 School Owned
Choosing this options has its pros and cons:
Cons

Schools are able to:
Read below to learn more about each of these:
1.2.1 Volume Purchasing Programs
To ensure that educational institutions (i) didn't have to register a separate Apple ID account for each iOS device, and (ii) could purchase apps at a discounted price, Apple set up the App Store Volume Purchasing Programs (VPP).
Education providers and businesses wishing to download paid apps onto their iPads/iPhones must ensure that they have set up their Apple ID Account under the App Store Volume Purchase Program. If your school has not registered for the Volume Purchasing Program you may be breaking the law, as normal Apple ID Accounts allow for multiple downloads of a program for free (up to three devices) once the app has initially been paid for. Use the following links to ensure that your devices are adhering to the appropriate volume purchasing program and copyright laws:

1.2.2 iOS Administration Tools
iOS devices owned by educational institutions by be controlled at an individual, class or whole school level via the use of iOS administration tools. Some of these tools are paid, some are free.
- one-to-one (access 1-to-1 essentials planning tools here)
- school sets (e.g. a set of 20 iPads to be shared across the school via booking or timetabled arrangements)
- class sets (e.g. 3 iPads for 22 students).
- its safe keeping
- the bringing of the device to school, and
- the payment of the apps they want/need to use
- the implementation of age restrictions for apps (see Section 4 below) .
Choosing this option has its pros and cons:
Pros
- Schools ensure that when new iOS models hit the market (e.g. iPad 2, iPad 3) that they are not locked into having older models around the school for the next five-ten years
- Schools do not have ongoing costs (such as the purchasing of apps or the fixing of broken screens).
Cons
- Some parents may not be able to afford the devices
- Students may forget to bring their iOS device to school when it is needed for an activity, so alternatives have to be planned
- It can lead to some students not having the apps that they need to use in class as they cannot afford them (e.g. Pages and Keynote). Therefore, to cater for these situations , there are a number of apps reviewed below, with both paid and free alternatives provided
- Student may not be able to install apps as their parents do not give them the password for their Apple ID, therefore than can be a 24 hour delay between a teacher needing an app to be installed (or teachers need to give 24 hours notice for students to install an app for use at school the next day)
- Students and parents are responsible for maintenance and care of their device and may need to purchase an extended Apple Care Protect Plans (Apple's extended warranty) in addition to Apple's One-Year Limited Warranty.
1.2 School Owned
Choosing this options has its pros and cons:
Cons
- When new iOS models hit the market (e.g. iPad 2, iPad 3) that they are locked into having older models around the school (therefore they must implement hardware migration plans)
- Schools have ongoing costs (such as the purchasing of apps or the fixing of broken screens if a student is not found to be at fault)
- Schools are responsible for maintenance and care of their device and may need to purchase an extended Apple Care Protect Plans (Apple's extended warranty) in addition to Apple's One-Year Limited Warranty
- Accidental damage or stolen devices may be covered under a school's insurance plan.
Pros
Schools are able to:
- Purchase lower-cost apps (via Volume Purchasing Programs)
- Manage iOS devices at an individual, class or whole school level (iOS administration) including setting age-restrictions on apps.
Read below to learn more about each of these:

2. Securing iOS Devices (Both in & Out of School)
Even though iOS devices that are connected to the school's internet are protected by a school's filters, all educational providers must ensure that they understand and have enacted the following areas before allowing students to use iOS devices in educational settings.
Note: If the students own each iOS device, these restrictions should be set up in consultation with a parent/guardian:
2.1 Setting Up Restrictions on an iOS Device
iOS devices used in educational settings must have restrictions set up on each iPad to block the students from accessing eBooks containing explicit sexual content, making in-app purchases, and to set restrictions on other age-related content (apps, films, tv programs). Click on each area below to access screenshots that demonstrate the setting of restrictions for a primary school setting.
General:

2.2.2 AB Tutor
The AB Tutor iPad Client is a free app that must be used in conjunction with the paid AB Tutor (a monitoring software to be installed on a Windows and Mac PC). Once the AB Tutor iPad client is installed on each iPad and students are directed to use the app, schools can:
- monitor iPad use via using Guided Access Mode, which when disabling Safari via an iPad's Restrictions tab. enables schools to temporarily lock the iPad down to the AB Tutor app exclusively (which has its own in-built internet browser)
- control, manage and monitor users whilst also allowing teachers to demonstrate and disseminate lesson content
- display a lesson plan, allow the student to create classwork and has the ability to collect this classwork, whilst all the time being monitored.
- display a student's screen to others
- use a safe in-built text chat to allow one-to-one or one-to-many chat between teacher and students
- lock/unlock student screens
- create work on an iPad which can then be retrieved by AB tutor console on the teacher's PC
- create, distribute and score simple one question polls in real time
- see at a glance see which apps are running
- block or allow specific web sites
- block internet access
- monitor for keywords
- enable privacy
- mute sound
- run inventory, including the ability to check an iPad's OS version.
Note:
- Once the app is closed, monitoring and control is no longer available via AB Tutor
- Interestingly, users must be at least 17 years old to download this app.
2.2.3 Casper Focus (Part of the Casper Suite)
As reviewed above, Casper Suite is a paid iOS & Mac OSX administration and management solution. Casper Focus is a management tool for teachers to manage student use of devices. Watch the video below to learn more.
3. Promoting the Use of Personal Devices
For each of the above three methodologies, ICT coordinators should also encourage students to bring in their personal iPads, iPhones and iPods to school, to increase portability as well as promoting the use of these complimentary devices. In class-sharing arrangements, schools can use this approach to increase student access and explore the benefits of moving towards the one-to-one use of iOS technology.
However, before embarking on this path, schools must ensure that they ensure that the ICT Coordinator/Administrator connects each student's device to the school's wi-fi network, so that any device:
- will be able to access the internet and apps whilst being protected by the school's filters
- will be able to access files from the school's network (e.g. student drive) when using an app such FileExplorer (Yes, iOS devices can access files from Windows Server)
- that has a 3G/4G sim card will automatically be overridden when a student enters the school's grounds, ensuring that students won't be able to access unauthorised materials whilst in the school grounds (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, porn) - As a matter of policy, students who 'disconnect' from the school's wi-fi should not be reconnected.
4. Cybersmart Education Policies
With the introduction/implementation of any new technology, schools must revisit, re-draft and implement cybersmart education policies and user agreements to ensure that they include the use of such devices. These polices and rules should be presented and signed by all staff, students and parents before devices can be used. Rules especially relating to the use of iOS devices should be displayed in each classroom (download a sample set of classroom iPad rules here).
5. Training and Supporting Staff, Students and Parents
With the introduction/implementation of any new technology, schools must ensure that they provide the necessary training and support that will enable all stakeholders to fully embrace it.
There are a few avenues that can make a school's initial 12-24 month foray into the use of iOS devices easier:
- Use this presentation to introduce first-time users to iPads
- Install the apps reviewed below one-at-a-time, as a whole staff body and whole class, allowing new users to experiment with each app and for experts to help guide others
- Learn how iPads can be used in Literature Circles here
- Tap existing knowledge: Have staff and students talk for two minutes each, one a week, on any hidden talents, tricks, shortcuts (such as taking a screen dump) or apps that they believe will be beneficial to others
- Feature an app of the week in each year level (pictured right) that students can write or blog about
- Distribute user guides in written or video (e.g. YouTube) format for each app (these can be found on the internet)
- Click here to access a step-by-step guide on how to use iPads and eBooks in Literature Circles.
6. Developing App Flows
App Flows (pictured left) are the forward-planning of a variety of apps to be used within a certain lesson, project or task, where students are required to use a new app for each process.
Common Sense Media have created a number of app flows for schools to consider as well as the free Graphite TM service for creating your own online app flows. Watch the video below to learn more:

Schools should also consider how many different apps can be used by students to complete the same or differentiated activities, as shown here.
7. Mapping iOS apps to Thinking Theorems
Like anything, iOS apps can also be mapped to meet the various thinking models that various schools use.
7.1 Gardener's Multiple Intelligence and Bloom's Taxonomy of Thinking
Silvia Rosenthal Tolisano has mapped various iOS apps to both Gardener's Multiple Intelligence and Bloom's Taxonomy of Thinking. Click on either image below to access her guides.
7.2. SAMR Model
TeachThought Staff have developed examples of how to use the SAMR model to frame how to teach with apps. Access the guide here.
7.3. LADDER Model
ResourceLink have developed examples of how to use the LADDER model to frame how to teach with apps. Access an explanation of the LADDER model and the LADDER app guide here.

8. Evaluating Student Work
Each time an iOS device is used as a tool for students to create pieces of work (e.g. projects), teachers and students should pre-plan the evaluation criteria for each task, with possible modifications to these criteria being made as students and teachers discover/use different facets/features of the required iOS apps. Download a sample Multi-modal Information Report Rubric here.
9. Critically Evaluating iOS Apps
Silvia Rosenthal Tolisano has created iPad app evaluation checklist that both students and teachers can fill out to help them perform critical analysis of any iOS app used either in the classroom or at home. These app reviews could then be stored on school websites or networks so that other students can access these to guide them in their app choices.
View a sample below, download a blank iPad app evaluation checklist or create your own filled with your own criteria.
Apps & Tools
Educational institutions must identify the key applications and tools that will unlock effective and efficient teaching and learning opportunities both in and out of the classroom. As such schools must make sure that both students and teachers are using their iOS devices as both a teaching tool and a learning tool.
To assist schools in developing world-best practices in their use of iOS devices, the following iOS apps and related software have been reviewed, and at an absolute minimum, administrators, teachers and students alike should have these apps installed.
If schools require students to purchase their own iOS device, the following apps should be distributed to families via email (upon presenting their iOS device to the school's ICT Administrator for connection to the school network) in the form of this website or via documentation such as these real school examples: 1 | 2.

Lesson & Activity Creation and Dissemination Apps & Tools
There are a number of apps, related software installations and tools that can be used to create and disseminate lessons and activities in whole-class, small group and one-to-one scenarios, ensuring that teachers are using iOS devices as a teaching tool.
These apps either allow users to:
Browse or use the quick links below to help access or disseminate lesson materials across iOS devices:

Having used the following lesson dissemination apps within a Year 4-6 composite classroom during the 2013 academic year, I have found that:
- There is a significant reduction in time spent on planning and creating lessons during the each week, even more so in the following academic year.
- Teachers develop a more clear and cohesive approach to delivering effective teaching and learning outcomes.
- Lessons become portable across any device, including computers, laptops, android tablets/phones and iOS devices.
- Placing lessons or units on a student accessible drive on a school network, so that students could access them via classroom computers or tablet devices using the apps reviewed below, allows students to work through the lessons at their own pace to cater for:
- students who were absent and might other-wise "miss" the lesson or require one-to-one time with a teacher or peers, to catch up
- integration children (with or without an aide)
- fast finishers or advanced students, who could extend their learning by accessing the next lesson(s) or activities, and at the same time act as the test students (or "experimental bunnies") to allow teachers to preview any pitfalls or successes before teaching the next step to the whole class.
File Explorer
The biggest gripe people have against iOS devices is that they say they can't access files from their computer or network, and instead have to use cloud solutions like Dropbox or Google Drive. This is simply no longer true. It is still amazing to see schools who have spent thousands of dollars on iOS or Android devices who do not know about the following apps.
The apps below allow teachers and students alike to access and open files on a connected wi-fi network. They are ideal as students and teachers can readily open network files in a matter of seconds without help and teachers no longer have to upload files to Google Drive/Drop Box.
NOTE: If your school or work has user logon, when using these apps users will be prompted to enter their normal Windows/Mac log-on username and password to access the files. Whilst various hidden network folders may be visible when using these apps (network administrators can set up drives to hide any folders if that is their desired option), the normal Windows log-on security procedures will still prevent students and teachers from opening files that their log-on does not permit.

Delivering All Mathematics Lessons using File Explorer (Free)
Developing a whole school or year-level approach to the delivery and dissemination of classes and activities via one-to-one iPad arrangements can have drastic impacts on student engagement and achievement.
In 2012, I spent three months full-time, researching, planning, creating and sourcing a wide-variety of units for all subject areas, particularly in the areas of English and Mathematics. This effort resulted in the development of lesson resources for every content descriptor and elaboration contained within the Australian Curriculum and AusVELS Mathematics strands and sub-strands, for Foundation to the end of Year 7 and the majority of the statements within the English curriculum, ready to run on an any device (iOS, IWB, laptop or android tablet/phone).
These lessons and activities can be used in whole class, small group and independent work scenarios. When used independent of the teacher as stand alone/individual lessons, this approach holds many parallels to the independent learner Goodger Maths program implemented primary schools in the 1980s and the Kent Maths program implemented in secondary schools in the 1990s.
Simply what the video below or follow these steps to see a sample of this delivery method via iOS devices:

Simply what the video below or follow these steps to see a sample of this delivery method via iOS devices:
- On a Windows/Mac/Linux computer, download the three sample units (below) and place them in your school's student or staff drive in a newly created folder named Mathematics.
- Ensure that you iOS device is connected to the school's wireless network.
- Install File Explorer (free).
- Install Microsoft PowerPoint for iPad Viewer (free) - All slide transitions and animations work using the official Microsoft app, whereas pre-existing apps that open PowerPoint files do not allow all transitions and animations to function correctly.
- Open File Explorer.
- Press + to add a network drive.
- Choose your platform (Mac OS X | Windows | Linux / Unix).
- Scroll down to Network Neighborhood to view all of the network drives and connected computers on your school's network.
- Find the network drive/IP address that is your student or staff network drive (if you cannot readily identify that yourself ask your ICT Coordinator or IT Administrator).
- Select the relevant network drive.
- You will be prompted to 'Connect as..' - Select Registered User.
- Enter the username and password you normally use to log onto a school computer (e.g. teacher or student log on).
- You will now be able to see your network's files and folders. Navigate to the Mathematics folder (from step 1) and select one of the Mathematics lessons. NOTE: If you wish to see more than one network drive (e.g. staff and student drives, or student's school drive and a home drive) you must upgrade to File Explorer Pro.
- Any selected file will open in FileExplorer's default viewer which in the case of PowerPoint presentations, does not play all slide transitions and animations. Therefore press on the top right-hand corner of the iOS device, press the 'Open with' symbol (the rectangle with upwards facing arrow), select 'Open in other apps' and choose 'Open in PowerPoint'.
- Users will only ever need to repeat steps 9-13 to open future files.
Alternatively, instead of installing File Explorer schools can upload the two sample units to an online storage account (e.g. Google Drive or DropBox) however these methods are inefficient as if educators have to constantly log in and upload files to the online solutions rather than just copy/save them into a designated folder on a student drive.

iBeacon
iBeacons are pieces of hardware (approx $20-$40 each) not created by Apple, that were initially visions to used by the retail industry to "push" product information to customers as they entered the proximity of a store.
However. they have since been used by schools to disseminate lesson content directly to student compatible iOS devices as they walk into a room.
An iBeacon transmits content (files, images, videos, etc.) via Bluetooth 4.0 which can be accessed via an App on a compatible iOS device. As students walk into a classroom, they open a specific app and their work is ready to be opened. Consequently, they could also be used in school tours to have specific content (such as images or video) play as a person enters each area of the school.

System Apps
The following apps have been designated the title 'System Apps' as they enable iOS devices interact or navigate within the file systems and/or desktops of Windows, Mac and Linux PCs.
File Explorer
The biggest gripe people have against iPads is that they say they can't access files from their computer or network, and instead have to use cloud solutions like Dropbox or Google Drive. This is simply no longer true. It is still amazing to see schools who have spent thousands of dollars on iPads or Android devices who do not know about the following apps.
The apps below allow teachers and students alike to access and open files on a connected wi-fi network. They are ideal as students and teachers can readily open network files in a matter of seconds without help and teachers no longer have to upload files to Google Drive/Drop Box.
NOTE: If your school or work has user logon, when using these apps users will be prompted to enter their normal Windows log-on username and password to access the files. Whilst various hidden network folders may be visible when using these apps (network administrators can set up drives to hide any folders if that is their desired option), the normal Windows log-on security procedures will still prevent students and teachers from opening files that their log-on does not permit.

Remote Desktop
Remote Desktop apps allow users to remotely control/use one device (e.g. a PC or Mac) on another device (e.g. a smartphone or tablet), essentially allowing an iOS device to work as a PC or Mac. Remote desktop apps can come in handy when iOS users need to use the functionality of or a program on a PC or Mac. Whilst there are many remote desktop apps, users should try to use the one from the most reliable companies. See some of the recommended apps below:

Using iPads in Literature Circles
The following example of how to use iPads in Literature Circles using the apps reviewed above and further below.
During 2013, I introduced the eBook, Kensuke's Kingdom by Michael Morpurgo, to a cohort of Year 4-6 students (ages 10-12) to be used during Literature Circles.
After consulting the Literacy Coordinator, I firstly set up the Lit Circles in four unorthodox fashions:
The modified Literature Circle roles were explained (adapted to meet the demands of the new Australian Curriculum/AusVELSAC) and the groups organised their role rotations for the first five chapters.
The students had access to the following hardware and software:
The students quickly adopted many different approaches to integrating the use of ICT when preparing and presenting their Lit Circle responses:
Discussion Managers (DMs):
Summarisers:
Code-Breakers (CBs):
Investigators:
Device Detectives (DDs):
After consulting the Literacy Coordinator, I firstly set up the Lit Circles in four unorthodox fashions:
- The class of 22 students were split into two Lit Circle groups: two groups of 11
- For chapters 1-5, the students were paired up with a Lit Circle buddy of similar ability (with two groups of three to cater for integration students)
- For chapters 6-10, the students were then put into mixed-ability pairings to allow students to be a mentor/supported
- The Lit Circles met twice weekly, once to prepare their chapter response in class and once to present/share with the teacher present. When Lit Circle 1 presented to the group and teacher, Lit Circle 2 prepared their chapter review.
The modified Literature Circle roles were explained (adapted to meet the demands of the new Australian Curriculum/AusVELSAC) and the groups organised their role rotations for the first five chapters.
The students had access to the following hardware and software:
- One iPad per pairing, with (i) a copy of the eBook and (ii) the following free apps: Flick., FileExplorer Free, Wireless Remote Mouse and the optional paid apps of Keynote or Pages
- 1 laptop with AirServer installed (to mirror an iPad's display & sound onto a Windows PC/Laptop/IWB)
- 1x IWB/projector
- 1x scanner/photocopier with scanning function
The students quickly adopted many different approaches to integrating the use of ICT when preparing and presenting their Lit Circle responses:
Discussion Managers (DMs):
- Preparation: Using the question stems to ensure that they were creating/asking seven different question types (inferring, locating information, main idea, making connections, paraphrasing & synonyms, referencing and sequencing), the DMs used a combination of their knowledge of the read chapter to create questions and iBooks to open the eBook when necessary (e.g. to create a referencing question)
- Presentation: The DMs typed up their work (or scanned their work using the classroom scanner if they ran out of time), placed the questions up on the IWB/projector via the laptop (an opened word document or jpeg scan) so that each member of the group could both hear and see the question. When none of the students knew the answer or if the question was a referencing question, using AirServer and iBooks to display the eBook onto the projected surface so that the group could locate the word or phrase in question and see its context.
Summarisers:
- Preparation: The summarisers used the eBook to skim and scan to locate relevant details so that they could create a thorough sequenced summary of the main events, characterisation, settings and share their opinion about the read text
- Presentation: They did not need any technology as they read aloud their summations to the group.
Code-Breakers (CBs):
- Preparation: The CBs interviewed each member of their group to determine the words that each person found difficult. They then scanned through the ebook to find further examples if they felt that they did not gather enough responses
- Presentation: They discussed one word at a time, (i) writing the word on the board, (ii) asking the group if anyone could pronounce the word, (iii) using AirServer to mirror their iPad onto the IWB/PC and using the search function within iBooks to show the word in a context and then read the sentence aloud (iv) asking the group why the world may have needed code-breaking, (v) asked for a and who knew the meaning of the word, (vi) using the definition feature within iBooks to show a definition of the world (which they had already written in their books).
Investigators:
- Preparation: The investigators either used Keynote or Pages on the iPad or used a class computer to create a presentations in PowerPoint or Word to display the results of their investigations (e.g. What are Kimonos? What happened in Nagasaki & Hiroshima?).
- Presentation: To display their investigations, the students used either just AirServer, or (i) the FileExplorer Free app to connect to the school network to access their Word/PowerPoint file and then display the file onto the IWB/projector via AirServer or (ii) the Wireless Remote Mouse app to remotely control the laptop to open the presentation from the network drive.
Device Detectives (DDs):
- Preparation: The DDs opened the Word document 'Analysing A Read Chapter' and skimmed and scanned the eBook to locate, copy and paste various literacy devices used throughout the chapter into the document.
- Presentation: To display the 'Analysing A Read Chapter' Word document, the students used the FileExplorer Free app to connect to the school network to access the file and then display the file onto the IWB/projector via AirServer, and then used the pinch and zoom gesture on the iPad to zoom into each device's box.
Teacher Feedback:
Whilst teachers generally don't listen to each Lit Circle present, a teacher's presence is rather valuable as they can:
Whilst teachers generally don't listen to each Lit Circle present, a teacher's presence is rather valuable as they can:
- Provide input into the discussion when no-one in the group knows the answer to the question.
- Monitor the quality of the work that has been created during the preparation phase.
- Monitor student use of oral language, turn-taking, and discussion of literature in a less formal setting than a Reciprocal Reading session.
- Provide rich and instantaneous feedback: Whilst listening to each Lit Circle present and discuss their analysis of each chapter, I used the iOS Flick app to type 'Post-its' on the teacher's iPad.
During their presentations, students kept on eye on their iPad screen as sometimes I "flicked" short messages off to student pairs to give them instant on-the-fly advice or to ask them to pay more attention!
At the end of the Lit Circle presentation, in combination with AirDisplay, I mirrored/displayed the individual and group feedback (see left) an IWB/projector.
At the end of the Lit Circle presentation, in combination with AirDisplay, I mirrored/displayed the individual and group feedback (see left) an IWB/projector.
The Lit Circles discussed above were a successful example of introducing the use of eBooks into a senior years classroom for the first time and using a myriad of other technologies (also for the first time) to support the students in their preparation and presentations of each rich Lit Circle.

Price: $7.49
Description: Numberlys is a part motion picture, part video game app for iPhone and iPad, created by the team behind the highly popular 'The Fantastic Flying Book Of Mr Morris Lessmore'.

During the gameplay it is hoped that young children start to develop a sense of the shape and 'origins' of the letters of the alphabet.
