QR Codes & Art: An Artistic Match
After seeing the image below contained within a Slidedeck (unfortunately I have not been ble to find the Slidedeck to provide the link) on Silvia Rosenthal Tolisano's 'Langwitches Blog', relating to her blog post about ''Transliteracy - QR Codes and Art'. The mind boggled at the concept of using QR Codes in Art!
Imagine parents walking through the school or attending an Art Show night, being able to watch videos of various students talk about the inspiration behind their artworks at the press of a button on their smartphone or tablet device!
QR Codes can be generated to hyperlink to a web addresses (e.g. online video or ePortfolio), generate an email, save a phone 'contact' card, generate an event (e.g. an art showing) or even a PayPal payment (to purchase a student's art)!
These are all ideas that private schools would be salivating over but one that is freely available for everyone! The future is most definitely here.

Considerations
- Before any videos of children are uploaded onto the internet, schools must ensure that parents have signed an Internet and Media Publishing Consent and Waiver Forms (most school Media Release Consent Forms do not address the move towards cloud-based storage and the sharing of digital content with a local/national/global audience)
- As a matter of courtesy, the file size of each video/audio should be stated underneath each QR code so that parents don't download over their smartphone's data limit
- A school-owned tablet device(s) (i.e. an iPad) linked to the school's data plan/wireless internet should be made available next to any presentation involving QR codes and be put in a prominent position secured to a wall/table
- On an art show night, school-owned tablet device(s) (i.e. iPads) should be made widely available and could be 'signed out' by parents, to allow those who do not have access to smartphones or their own devices to view the work
- Art work can be scanned and emailed to parents who can't make it to school during school hours) who can then scan the QR code(s) to watch videos of students reciting or reflecting upon their work.
To learn more about QR codes visit the QR Codes in Literacy & Art section or if you are already familiar with the concept, download the desired apps below:

The Artistic Touch: Touch Screen Drawing & Painting
The development of touch screen technology has come a long way in the last few years. Whilst parents and early years teachers have apps on their phones and tablet devices to allow their young children to create finger paintings (minus the paint) and graphic artists have used specialised apps to embrace the precision and portability of new technology, educational institutions at a primary and secondary level who have touchscreen computers often do not use them to teach art.
Image © IntelFreePress CC BY 2.0
Educational institutions who invest money in the purchasing of touchscreen technology need to query the companies who are providing the quotes, the resellers and the manufactures as to the suitability of the touchscreen devices in relation to art classes.
If schools are truly aiming to prepare students with the digital skills for both the current and future workplaces, budding artists need to have access to the same technology that is currently being used in the workplace (see the example below of artists from DreamWorks Animation as they show you how to draw characters from The Croods).

Multi vs Single Touch
Whilst touch screen computers are making appearances within schools, most of them are only single touch. However, as computers are starting to become smaller and are being sold as all-in-one centers (with the 'tower' now being built into the screen), more single and multi-touch hardware and software products making their way into the mainstream.
Windows/Mac/Linux
(i) Hardware
To "paint" or "draw" using a touch surface, a special but generally inexpensive pen/stylus is needed. It is vital that schools contact the company that is fulfilling their touchscreen quote/order as well as the manufacture to ascertain whether their devices are ideally suited for drawing and painting via the use of a stylus and which models may be suitable or purchasable during the ordering process. Click here to read more about pens/styluses.
To view the current list of manufacturers, their models, the number of touch points they offer and approximate pricing, click here. Pictured above (top) is Lenovo's IdeaCentre A720 with 10-point multi-touch technology for greater accuracy and flexibility, which can be used to to create hand "painted" works of art
(ii) Software
Whilst most artistic software supports/detects a single-touch (e.g. a stylus/pen), there are a few digital painting programs emerging that are designed to embrace Windows 8 multi-touch technology. Whilst most only currently allow for both the use of a single-touch pen/paintbrush and the use of multi-touch controlling gestures such as pinch and zoom, there are some emerging that will detect the use of multi-touches to draw, paint or detect the delicate and intricate strokes of specialised paintbrushes.

Android
Android tablets and various Android phones also have multi-touch technology, the Multi touch Painting Demo app was the first and only app to embrace the use of multitouch painting. Due to its demo nature and it's availability on only old tablet devices (2.x), it would not be suitable for use in schools. Plenty of apps exist that can show users how many multi-touches their device can handle, but applications that embrace this technology are a few years away.
Adobe Photoshop Touch (Paid: iOS | Android) embraces the use of the touchscreen and stylus, however, it is only able to capture a single-touch.
iOS (Apple)
Apple's iPad 2 (iOS 5+) and various portable Macbooks have multi-touch technology, but it is confined to multitasking gestures such as 'pinch and zoom' (using two to five fingers) or swipe actions to navigate and close screens. iPhones do not have multi-touch as the screens are simply just to small to support the function.

There are a variety of stylus/pens for iPads, however, the Intuos Creative Stylus 2 by Wacom will go on sale in October for the price of $US79.99 which offers 2,048 pressure sensitivity levels. Their current model, the Bamboo Stylus fineline ($US59.96) offers 1024 pressure levels, reacting to the pressure being applied by the user, resulting in lighter or stronger strokes accordingly. They also offer budget-priced Bamboo Stylus Solo and Bamboo Stylus Duo for $US19.99 and $US29.99, respectively.

Digital Drawing Devices
If schools are not able to provide touch-screen drawing opportunities to their students, they should ensure that students are still able to use digital drawing peripheral devices beyond using a computer mouse.
One manufacturer of such peripheral devices is Wacom, who have created the wireless Bamboo™ Pad ($US79.99). The Bamboo™ Pad is a touchpad with a digital stylus that allows users to combine simple hand gestures with a pen for more convenient and intuitive navigating and annotation. It uses plug and play technology, and no installation is required for technology using Windows 7 and Windows 8. A driver for the Mac OS X operating system is also available.
3D Modelling
There are various 3D modelling programs for digitally sketching and modelling works of art and design.
Once such program, Tremble SketchUp (free for educational use), allows users to create 3D models and position them accurately on the Earth in two ways:

Artistic Augmented Realities
Augmented reality (AR) is a technology that enables people to digitally manipulate/augment a version of reality and replace it with a virtual one, essentially using the power of technology to present users with a modified view/version of reality. Artificial information about the environment and its objects can be overlaid on the real world and the surrounding environment can be digitally manipulated and made to be interactive.
As augmented realities are starting to become more prevalent, art teachers and students should be exploring the uses of augmented realities to created augmented art.
The key to using AR apps in the business world is to give consumers the opportunity to view:
The key to integrating AR into the study of art is to introduce a new layer or objects that were not in the original "real" art work to appear when the AR app's camera views the original artwork.
As augmented realities are starting to become more prevalent, art teachers and students should be exploring the uses of augmented realities to created augmented art.
The key to using AR apps in the business world is to give consumers the opportunity to view:
- Objects without actually needing to open the package or have the life-sized object actually there (i.e. product placement - see below).
- Modifications or additions to the original object or view of the object (i.e. car modifications/additions such as spoilers, paint colours and rims or 2D objects that become 3D when viewed with an AR app).
- The object functioning without needing to operate the object.
- Additional information (text, graphics, audio or video - e.g. simulations or characters speaking) that is not normally available when viewing the object with the naked eye. The information can be overlayed and be static (unchanged) or show real-time data.
The key to integrating AR into the study of art is to introduce a new layer or objects that were not in the original "real" art work to appear when the AR app's camera views the original artwork.

In her On The Edge Blog, Dr. Silvana Meneghini wrote the following post about how to incorporate augmented realty into art classes:
Step 1: Take a picture of the real object for your Trigger Image
Step 2: Use a Green Screen App to create an Overlay Video
- Tip: If the trigger image is not detailed enough it will generate an error.
- Crop the image on its more detailed parts.
- The resulting Aura will be focused around the cropped part, but at least it will show.
Step 2: Use a Green Screen App to create an Overlay Video
- Install Green Screen by Do Ink for iPad (access the tutorial)
- Add the Camera to record over green screen
- Add the Trigger Image (the same as the real object – will show on the background)
- Place camera so actor appears in the right position over background image
- Record.
Step 3: Use Aurasma Studio to create an Aura
Step 4: Provide instructions for Viewers
- Use the online Aurasma Studio rather than the App
- Add a Channel
- Add your Trigger image
- Add your Overlay video
- Create / Add an Aura:
- Select Trigger image
- Select Overlay
- Choose Channel.
Step 4: Provide instructions for Viewers
